National Bulk Foods Week Celebrating Six Years of Saving Shoppers

Money and Reducing Packaging Waste

Record Number of Stores expected to take part in Milestone Week October 16-22

Little Rock, AR – May 10, 2016 – A record number of grocery stores and natural food co-ops are expected to join the Bulk is Green Council (BIG) in celebrating six years of recognizing National Bulk Foods Week. The milestone celebration, October 16-22, is an easy way for shoppers to directly experience all the economical and environmental benefits of shopping the bulk aisles. During the week participating stores will offer special discounts on natural and organic foods in their bulk sections.

“National Bulk Foods Week continues to be one of the most compelling ways for both retailers and consumers to showcase their love for foods from the bulk bins,” said Brett Karminski, brand manager at Frontier Co-op, a founding BIG member. “We’ve seen so much enthusiasm for our annual celebration because it provides an excellent starting point for those new to shopping in the bulk section and all the benefits that offers.”

BIG, a non-profit industry consortium, staged the first National Bulk Foods Week in October 2011 as a way to introduce the bulk aisles to shoppers who may not regularly visit them. The response that first year was tremendous, and the celebration has grown each year since. This year, BIG expects a record number of stores – more than 1,750 – to take part.

BIG has found that many shoppers want to enjoy more natural and organic foods, but that they have concerns about the affordability of doing so. In celebrating National Bulk Foods Week each year, BIG and its retail partners set out to demonstrate how buying natural and organic foods from the bulk bins can save shoppers money --anywhere from 10 – 89%, according to a 2012 study. Buying in bulk also helps divert packaging waste from landfills.

For those who haven’t yet discovered the joys of shopping the bulk foods section, the fifth annual National Bulk Foods Week provides the perfect opportunity for shoppers to get on board with the bulk foods philosophy and experience the benefits of shopping the bulk aisles.

The sixth annual National Bulk Foods Week will take place October 16 through October 22, 2016, at more than 1,750 stores across the country. To locate participating stores or for more information on National Bulk Foods Week, visit BulkisGreen.org.
